Project ASTER
Empowering Rwandan Talent Through Global Education
Project ASTER is a transformative initiative by Progetto Rwanda Onlus in partnership with Isomo Academy, a division of Bridge2Rwanda, with the aim to identify and support Rwanda’s brightest high school students, helping them secure opportunities for higher education at leading prestigious Italian universities.
First launched in March 2023, the program equips students to overcome financial and logistical challenges, ensuring their success in international academic environments. The program also fosters connections between students and their home communities in Rwanda, reinforcing a commitment to national development.
Our Approach and Selection process
Every year, over 100 talented students participate in the Isomo Bootcamp, an intensive summer program that combines intensive advanced English training and college preparatory courses. From this pool, we select the best candidates—students with academic performance, leadership potential, and a commitment to community service. These students become the core of Project ASTER, embarking on a journey supported by comprehensive guidance and resources.
After rigorous evaluation, every year five students are chosen to participate in Project ASTER.
Admission and Scholarship Process
With our guidance, students submit applications to universities in Rome, including Tor Vergata, La Sapienza, and LUISS University, as well as Università di Camerino. We maintain close communication with these institutions throughout the process, tracking application statuses and promptly providing any additional information required to secure admission offers and to secure their places at their respective universities. Progetto Rwanda makes the necessary enrolment payments in a timely manner, guaranteeing their places at the universities while meeting all critical deadlines.
Once admitted, selected students are supported in applying for scholarships such as Lazio DiSCo Scholarship and ERDISU Marche scholarship, which fully cover their tuition, living expenses, and additional academic costs. They receive assistance in completing the extensive documentation necessary to demonstrate financial need and academic merit.
Pre-Departure Preparation and Logistical Assistance
To ensure a smooth transition for students traveling to Italy, we provide comprehensive logistical support. This involves working closely with them to gather all necessary documentation for visa applications and offering personalized guidance during their appointments at the Italian Embassy, including thorough preparation for their visa interviews.
In preparation for their departure from Rwanda, we take full responsibility for their travel arrangements, covering the costs of flights and coordinating schedules to align with university orientation dates. To further support their integration, we secure suitable temporary housing for their first six months in Italy, prioritizing proximity to their universities and convenient access to public transportation. During this period, we also provide financial support to bridge gaps caused by delays in scholarship payments, ensuring all students have access to basic needs and resources.
Upon arrival, we provide on-the-ground assistance, including airport reception, university enrolment, and support with obtaining residence permits. Regular check-ins and mentorship ensure students’ academic progress and personal well-being, while encouraging participation in community-building activities to foster a sense of belonging in their new environment.
Results
The first year of the ASTER project has produced significant results. All students completed their first academic year at Italian universities, successfully tackling rigorous programs and adapting to a new culture. They have developed language skills in Italian, allowing them to connect with their colleagues and integrate into their communities.
Upon completing their studies, students commit to returning to Rwanda to drive the country’s development or pursue further education. By fostering academic success, cultural adaptability, and a spirit of leadership and service, Project ASTER is shaping a new generation of leaders dedicated to creating meaningful change in their communities and beyond.
